TRANSITIONAL LIVING

Alexander Masching, Michael Masching, Vienna (AT)

“Transitional Living” transfers the design principle “form follows function” into “form follows needs” for smart residential solutions: the goal is to give the inhabitants themselves the opportunity to define the spaces they need according to individual and emotional needs, on several levels, distinguishing between private and public spaces. So-called sharing is already a characteristic of our times; however, conventional residential construction hardly offers innovative solutions for these new circumstances of life. This is where the project comes in, offering communal living in a collective instead of side-by-side living. Functional requirements take a back seat to social interaction, self-realization and individuality. These emotional needs subsequently serve as a basis for dividing spaces. Based on a simple grid model, flexible spaces are developed as a modular design system. The structural support provides a strict raster. Individual types of rooms, serving as building blocks, are combined into clusters using a space syntax, or building instructions. However, it is not merely the cohabitation within that is thus transformed; the flexible structure allows for new living spaces to be added in niches and existing buildings, thereby actively changing the surroundings. The cooperation is organized by a registered association. Thus, classical residential living is transformed into communal living, focusing on emotional needs.
