Zzz - Schlafkulturelle Revolution | Jerome Becker, Florian Sammer, Lukas Vejnik

Jerome Becker, Florian Sammer and Lukas Vejnik have been awarded with a Honorary Mention for "Z z Z – A Revolution of Sleeping Culture".

Given the fact that a human being spends about a third of his or her life – in other words, much more time than for any other necessity – asleep in bed, ZzZ explores the question whether it is time to leave the “sleep bastion” of one’s individual home behind, examining the socio-cultural background of sleep with the help of historical analyses from the fields of art, sociology and architecture.

Globalisation has brought a plurality of different sleep rhythms, yet the structure of our society allows mainly for a mono-phase of sleep lasting 7.5 hours on average between the hours of 9 pm and 10 am. However, human beings would be quite capable of acquiring multiple-phase sleep patterns, spreading their daily need for sleep over several units. A better distribution of phases of rest would also naturally reduce the need for sleep. In order to do justice to these circumstances, the project developed concepts for a “revolution of sleeping culture”. This is based on the decoupling of sleep from a specific place, enabling the polycentric use of the city. The suggested interventions in the public space, from furniture to buildings, demonstrate the potentials of their concept to make sleep possible according to individual rhythms and needs, but also to make the private sphere perceivable as a collective experience.
