Bauamt | Philipp Hoppe

This slightly different “Bauamt” (“Building Authority”) is a charitable organisation searching for ways to transform the efforts of informal initiatives regarding urban development into concrete projects. The point of departure of the “Bauamt” is the increased need for direct participation in the design of public space. Historically, our cities usually developed through centralised, top-down processes, since the high complexity of urban-planning concepts contradicts the simplification necessary for a broad audience. In order to improve the situation, “Bauamt” is conceived as a platform where the various protagonists who are involved and interested in the design of our urban living environment can come together. The basic idea involves bottom-up planning processes engaging activist city users who make it their responsibility to actively design their environment, as well as experts in architecture, culture, urban planning etc, whose role is to advise and moderate. Thus, participation is achieved through small, specific interventions, meant to exert a lasting positive influence on the development of Vienna’s neighbourhoods. Communication and exchange takes place at first via digital networks following the principles of open source and creative commons. Thus, the project makes it easy for urban dwellers to contribute ideas, which can then be implemented as a holistic entity, with support from the platform and those involved in it.
