Population growth, increasing urbanisation and a greater number of social change processes will make greater demands on architecture and urban planning regarding the creation of residential and living spaces. In light of these current demographic, social and cultural change processes, the architecture and design award Superscape seeks innovative and visionary architectural and spatial concepts exploring new models of residential living, design experiments and strategies for living in the urban context, over a broad, 50-year expanse of time. Which standards are expendable, which are necessary, and how much are they changing? Which latitudes and creative potentials can be identified, given the background of changing life circumstances, new everyday customs and a society which is constantly diversifying? How can the residential spaces of tomorrow’s cities withstand these developments?

Architecture‘s margins for action in this context are also the topic of the 2016 Architecture Biennial. Its director, Alejandro Aravena, proposes to assemble projects, ideas and buildings under the title Reporting from the Front which confront the limitations of architecture and its current and future requirements, in order to effect concrete improvements for residents and society as a whole.

Overcoming such limitations and opening up a creative free space – that is also the intention of the Superscape Award, whose goal in 2016 is to question existing patterns of living and developing forward-thinking concepts for liveable residential spaces in tomorrow’s cities. Designer and design theorist Harald Gründl, curator and journalist Lilli Hollein and architect Anna Popelka will discuss the expectations and challenges inherent in this concept with Wolfgang Pauser on January 19, 2016 at the Architecture Centre Vienna.
